Okinawa’s natural beauty and its unique culture are at the heart of our project; Capturing as well as Framing such beauty is the driving concept behind our proposal. Inspired by life at the oceanfront and with the laws of nature of the rise and fall of the tide, the hotel complex is strategically situated on top of a berm, rising gently from the street level, revealing a series of green scape intertwining with cafes and restaurants, many with open-air terraces.
Sweeping structures, reminiscent of the ocean waves, are introduced to create such viewing apparatus within the public areas of the hotel while more controlled viewing windows are applied in the private areas such as guestrooms. Some capture distant vistas, while others provide an inner sanctum for the hotel guests as well as visitors alike to enjoy. These viewing frameworks simultaneously attain and reflect the local surroundings, juxtaposing the intimacy, beauty, and significance of their immediate urban context with that of the desired but at times unattainable view beyond.
Exposed RC structure enhances the effect of “Framing”; building facades are composed of local Ryukyu limestone (琉球石灰岩), granite (花崗岩), timber wood siding( 木板), stucco (灰泥) and painted concrete (水泥上色). The complex is comprised of a few functional masses: Hotel, Reception Hall, F&B and Retail, Onsen Spa Center, Conference / Banquet Center, and Chapel. While it functions primarily as a hotel with the associated F&B outlets ranging from All Day Dining to Chinese and Western as well as a local cuisine restaurant; it also has an onsite yet independently operated Onsen Spa Center as well as a conference/banquet center.
In lieu of the traditional podium which typically houses the public functions, BERM-like structures encompass the public domain such as F&B and retail outlets. At the heart of the complex lays an open-air atrium, this not only provides an inner sanctum for the hotel guests; but it also offers a semi-outdoor field for various events and activities.
